Ontario GHG Program: Potential Resources for Regulated Community

In our blogs, GHG Cap and Trade: Details Continue to Emerge and Despite Calls for Change – GHG Cap and Trade is Here, we provided some of the details about who is regulated by the approaching (Ontario) Greenhouse Gas Cap and Trade Program.

We wanted to provide some additional resources for small and medium size companies who may be hustling to assess the applicability and may be looking for resources.

The information below is from the SMART Green funding program. Thanks to Stephanie McCallum, Government Liaison, Canadian Association for Surface Finishing, for the heads up regarding this program (NOTE: Some SMART programs are “closed” and according to the website, updates are coming this fall).

Canadian Manufacturers & Exporters will add to the legacy of the CME SMART funding program this fall with a new $25 million Green SMART fund for small- and medium-sized manufacturers, in partnership with the Ontario government. Since 2008, CME SMART has administered $65 million in direct funding to more than 1,200 manufacturing companies across Ontario.

The new SMART green funding program will provide assistance to Ontario’s small- and medium-sized manufacturers to reduce greenhouse gas (GHG) and improve their energy efficiency and productivity. The program, as have past SMART funding rounds, will improve the competitiveness of the Ontario manufacturing supply chain delivering value not just to the SME-eligible manufacturers, but, also large manufacturers.

Just a reminder for those companies with larger sources of GHGs that must submit a verified report… the deadline to register for the cap and trade aspect of the regulation (O. Reg. 144/16) is November 30, 2016.

As we stated in our May 27th blog, one of the broader categories for inclusion in the regulation is General stationary combustion.  This includes combustion of fuel for heat or energy in both industrial and commercial businesses.
